Hornsby, NSW, Australia

Where we live and serve

The Hornsby, New South Wales, Australia community action committee is in northern Sydney – Australia’s largest city.

About our CAC

Our community has a vibrant 90-member support group with complementary programming, including special exercise and choir programs. The group meets regularly and stays informed about Parkinson’s treatments and research. We aim to develop close ties with local hospitals and our local representatives, both at a State and Federal level.

Our “Why?”

Our community lacks a general awareness of Parkinson’s and there are a limited number of Parkinson’s specialists and trained medical professionals. Additionally, engaging diverse communities is an area of focus.

Overall, there are diverse and accessible program options for people with Parkinson’s but to gain maximum benefit from the programs you do need private health insurance. Australia has recently legislated a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) which provides access to individualized programs for people with Parkinson’s. However, the scheme has had a slow roll out and access to programs and services has an extended waiting period.

Our Healthy Parkinson’s Community Vision

Our community is committed to improving life for people affected by Parkinson’s in Hornsby local government areas by:

  1. Delivering programs and services to allow everyone with Parkinson’s, their families and care partners to live life to the fullest
  2. Increase public awareness of Parkinson’s
  3. Advocate with local, State and Federal Governments for our members
  4. Develop closer ties with local Health Professionals.

Involvement with the Healthy Parkinson’s Communities will provide direction and resources to help us achieve our mission. We also trust that the Foundation will provide access to programs that will help the well-being and lifestyle of people living with Parkinson’s and their care partners.
